Privacy policy
Last updated: October 15, 2026
Families usually come to us at a hard time. This policy explains, in plain language, what personal information Maritime Burials collects when you plan a service, list a vessel or shop our memorial store, why we need it, who sees it, and the choices you have. It applies to maritimeburials.com and the Maritime Burials app. "Maritime Burials", "we" and "us" mean Maritime Burials, LLC.
The short version
•
We collect what we need to arrange your service or fill your order, and nothing more.
•
We don't sell your personal information. We use Google Analytics and Google Ads to see how families find us, and you can opt out of advertising cookies at any time.
•
Your captain sees your contact details only once your booking is confirmed.
•
Card payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your full card number.
•
You can ask us to see, correct or delete your information at any time.
Information you give us
Families planning a service
•
Account details: your name, email address and password. If you send an inquiry without an account, we create one for the email you give so you can follow the conversation.
•
Your inquiry: the date, number of guests, add-ons and anything you share about the ceremony you have in mind.
•
Messages you exchange with captains and with us through the site.
•
Booking details: the offer you accept, the service date, the departure point and your phone number.
•
About your loved one: anything you choose to tell us or your captain, such as a name or the paperwork needed for the service. Only share what's needed. We use it only to arrange the service and to meet the legal requirements described below.
•
Reviews you leave after a service.
Memorial store customers
Your name, email, phone number and shipping address, and what you ordered.
Captains and charter operators
Your business and contact details, vessel and listing information, photos, your captain's license, insurance and any state license, and the area terms you accept. To pay you, Stripe collects your identity and bank details directly. We see only your payout status, never your bank account number.
Information collected automatically
•
Technical data: like any website, our hosting and security providers record your IP address, browser type and the pages you request. We use this to keep the site running, secure and free of abuse.
•
On your device: we store what's needed for the site to work, such as keeping you signed in and remembering your cart.
•
Analytics and advertising cookies: we use Google Analytics to understand which pages are useful and where visitors come from, and Google Ads to measure whether our ads lead to inquiries, bookings and orders and to show our ads to people who have visited our site. These tools record pages viewed, the boats and products you look at, and actions like sending an inquiry or completing a purchase (with the amount, but not your name, email or card details). You can opt out of advertising cookies on our Your Privacy Choices page, linked at the bottom of every page, and we honor Global Privacy Control signals automatically.
•
Embedded content: boat pages may show a Google map, and our videos play from YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode, which doesn't load until you press play. Google may collect information when you use these, under Google's own privacy policy.
How we use your information
•
To pass your inquiry to the captain, arrange your service, take payment and pay the captain.
•
To send emails about your booking or order, such as offers, confirmations, trip details and reminders, and to ask for a review afterwards.
•
To fulfil and ship store orders.
•
To review and approve captains and listings, and to help captains follow the burial at sea rules where they operate.
•
To answer your questions and resolve problems or disputes.
•
To keep the platform safe and prevent fraud and misuse. For example, contact details shared in messages are hidden until a booking is confirmed.
•
To meet our legal, tax and accounting obligations.
We may occasionally send news about Maritime Burials. Every such email has an unsubscribe link. Unsubscribing doesn't stop emails about a booking or order you've made.
Who we share it with
•
Your captain or charter operator: your name, party details, messages and, once your booking is confirmed, your email and phone number, so they can run your service. Captains are independent businesses and must handle your information only to provide your service.
•
Families who book with a captain: the captain's business name and, once a booking is confirmed, the contact details and departure point needed for the service.
•
Our service providers, who process information for us under contract: Stripe (payments and payouts), Supabase (database and accounts), Vercel and Cloudflare (website hosting, security and photo storage), Resend (email), and Google (maps, Google Analytics and Google Ads).
•
Store suppliers, such as our florist and urn makers: your name, shipping address and order so they can make and deliver it.
•
Government agencies, where the law requires it. Burial at sea rules require captains to report a service to the U.S. EPA (the date, location and departure port), and some states require a permit or report to a county registrar. Captains handle these filings for your service.
•
Legal and safety reasons: to comply with the law or a valid legal request, to enforce our terms, or to protect anyone's rights or safety.
•
A business transfer: if Maritime Burials is ever sold or merged, your information would pass to the new owner under this policy.
We do not sell personal information for money. Our use of Google Ads cookies may count as "sharing" personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising under California law, and possibly as a "sale" or "targeted advertising" under other state laws. You can opt out on our Your Privacy Choices page.
Reviews
Published reviews show your first name, your rating, your words and the month of the service, alongside the boat you booked. Please don't include private details about your loved one that you wouldn't want to be public. We can remove a review on request.
How long we keep it
We keep your account for as long as it's open. We keep booking, payment and order records for as long as tax, accounting and burial at sea record-keeping rules require, generally up to seven years. Captain documents are kept while the captain is listed and for a period afterwards in case of a dispute. When we no longer need information, we delete it or make it anonymous.
How we protect it
Information is encrypted in transit, and access is limited to the people who need it. Captains' license and insurance documents are private to Maritime Burials. Card details go directly to Stripe. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong password that you don't use anywhere else, and tell us right away if you think your account has been misused.
Your choices and rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to:
•
tell you what personal information we hold about you and send you a copy;
•
correct anything that's wrong;
•
delete your information, except what we must keep for legal or accounting reasons;
•
stop sending you news emails.
Residents of California and other states with privacy laws have these rights by law, along with the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. To opt out of the sharing of your information for advertising, use the Your Privacy Choices page linked at the bottom of every page. We also treat a Global Privacy Control signal from your browser as an opt-out. We won't treat you differently for using any of these rights.
To make a request, email support@maritimeburials.com from the address on your account. We may need to confirm your identity first, and we'll respond within the time the law allows (usually 45 days). You may use an authorized agent; we'll ask for proof that they act for you. If we decline a request, you can appeal by replying to our decision.
Children
Our services are for adults. You must be 18 or older to create an account, book or order. We don't knowingly collect information from children. If you think a child has given us information, contact us and we'll delete it.
Links to other sites
Our site links to other websites, such as government pages about scattering rules. Their privacy practices are their own.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll also tell you by email or on the site before it takes effect.
