How booking works

Every service is a private charter with a licensed local captain. Nothing is charged until you have a written offer you're happy with.

1. Choose a boat

Search by city, date and number of guests. Each listing shows the vessel, how many people it carries, where it departs and the charter price.

2. Send an inquiry

Tell the captain your preferred date and anything that matters for the ceremony: how many guests, readings or music, flowers, or a place that meant something to your loved one. Asking costs nothing.

3. Get a written offer

The captain replies with an offer: the date, start time, total price and any add-ons. Captains aim to reply within 24 hours. You can ask questions in the same conversation before deciding.

4. Accept and pay

When you accept, you pay securely online by card through Stripe. The total shows the charter price and an 11.5% booking fee before you pay. Your booking is confirmed straight away and the captain is notified.

5. Before the day

You and your captain can see each other's contact details once you've booked. We send reminders a week before, the day before and the morning of the service, with the departure point and anything your captain wants you to know. Bring the cremation paperwork from your funeral home; the rules for your state are on our scattering rules pages.

6. The service

Your party is the only one aboard. The captain takes you to the scattering point, at least three nautical miles out for an ocean scattering, and gives you the time you need. Afterwards the captain records the coordinates for you.

If plans change

If the weather or anything else gets in the way, the first step is always a new date. If a new date won't work and you cancel, you're refunded the charter price less the booking fee and card processing. If the captain cancels and none of the new dates suit you, you get a full refund, booking fee included. See our terms for the details.
